Farleys Yard Arts Awards

Prestigious Arts Award now in itsThird Year

Young people from ten schools and colleges across East Sussex are exhibiting their art work for the prestigious Farleys Yard Arts Awards 2008.

This showcase of outstanding work is on show at Farleys Yard Barn Gallery for school visits, by appointment, from Monday 13 to Friday 17 October 10am – 1pm , telephone 01435 866066 ext 256. The Gallery will open to the public for one day only on Saturday 18 October from 11am to 4pm , Admission free.

East Sussex County Councillor David Elkin, Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, will give the welcoming speech at the Awards ceremony at 12 noon on Sunday 12 October at the Farleys Yard Barn Gallery, Chiddingly, for exhibitors, their parents, school governors, teachers and guests.

The aim of the Farleys Yard Arts Awards is to celebrate and raise awareness of the creative achievement of young people in East Sussex schools and colleges, promoting a wider recognition of the importance of creative work in schools, and giving young people the opportunity to exhibit their work beyond the classroom and into the community.

The Arts Awards are the initiative of The Farley's Yard Trust with the aim of widening the audience for the arts inspired by his parent's artistic legacy and has been specifically designed to support and encourage the Visual Arts in local education.

Ten schools from across East Sussex will once again participate and enter the work of students who are undertaking Art at GCSE and A-Level. Awards are made in six categories; with two special Surrealism Awards.

The Surrealist category winners works will be exhibited in Farley Farm House in Chiddingly, alongside works by Roland Penrose, Lee Miller and other leading artists of the 20th century including Pablo Picasso, Man Ray and Max Ernst, for the 2009 public opening season.

The Awards are judged by Anthony Penrose and Ian Chance, the Trusts Artistic Director, who said “We're delighted with the high quality response from East Sussex schools, with outstanding creative work that can be enjoyed by everyone in the community”.

The winners receive the Trusts prestigious Award Certificate, and their school will receive a prize of Artists materials or equipment up to the value of £250. All 14 awards have been contributed by local and national businesses.
