Relating Ami’s workshops to the National Curriculum & the QCA Scheme of Work for Art

While the Programme of Study in the National Curriculum for Art doesn’t specify particular movements or artists to be covered at Key Stages 1 and 2, children respond very readily to Surrealist imagery. In particular they seem to like the often amusing, dreamlike and impossible images and the juxtaposition of everyday objects in unusual settings to create something new and unexpected – the ‘finding the extraordinary’ in the ordinary. Many of the images make an excellent focus for Speaking and Listening activities and lend themselves well to story-writing. Equally, some of the techniques explored by the Surrealist artists can be easily explored in the classroom.

Links can be made between Ami’s presentations and several of the Key Stage 1 and 2 units for those schools using the QCA Scheme of Work for Art, including:

Unit 1A Self-portrait
Unit 1C What is sculpture?
Unit 2A Picture this!
Unit 3A Portraying relationships
Unit 3C Can we change places?
Unit 4A Viewpoints
Unit 5A Objects and meaning
