My Grandad – Roland Penrose (1900-1984)

My Granny – Lee Miller (1907-1977)

"A lot of the content is drawn from my own experiences of growing up with Surrealist art and its techniques. By relating some of my experiences and the ways I found out about the techniques as a child helps contextualise and make the whole experience more real for the students ".
Ami Bouhassane 2004.

Ami’s School Visits

Ami’s sessions in school draw on her own experience of growing up surrounded by Surrealist art. Although her grandmother, Lee Miller, died not long after her birth, she talks animatedly about her relationship with her grandfather, Roland Penrose, her introduction to Surrealism as a child, and has been working closely with her grandmother’s pictures and grandfather’s collection since 2000.

Her presentations are fully illustrated with family photographs of her grandparents’ work and followed by practical activity. They last between 1½ and 2 hours. The sessions can be adjusted to meet the individual needs of schools and teachers.
Primarily Ami Bouhassane’s program is directed at primary school Key Stage 2, it is sometimes possible as a special request for her to visit key stage 1, 3 and GCSE students. See how the programmes relate to the National Curriculum >
